Ryder Cup( Match Play)

In keeping with the Ryder Cup philosophy, the two nine-hole events on Thursday and the 18-hole event on Friday will be conducted using match play.

Match play is a scoring system in golf where players or teams compete head-to-head on a hole-by-hole basis, earning a point for each hole they win. The winner is the player or team with the most points at the end of the event format, and the total number of strokes taken doesn’t matter. Match play encourages more aggressive and strategic play, as players focus on winning individual holes instead of minimizing their overall stroke count.

Some key rules of match play:

· A player/ team wins a hole by completing it in the fewest number of (gross) strokes.

· A player/ team may concede a stroke, hole or even match to their opponent.

· In case of a tie, the match is considered halved.

Wednesday June 19, 2024 at 4 pm

The 24 players will be divided up into two teams….Europeans and Americans. European Team Captains  will announce their teams.

Pairings for Thursday golf matches will also be announced.

We will also conduct a putting contest ……Europeans against Americans…..with each team member putting to a hole and the distance remaining to the hole measured. The total remaining distance for each team will be totaled and the team with the shortest distance wins.

Tee Boxes

For both days of play, everyone will play from the WHITE tees EXCEPT on Holes 4, 5 & 17 where the GOLD tees will be utilized.

Handicaps

Match play is characteristically played using the gross score without using handicaps.

Thursday

Tee times will begin at 8:30 am .

There will be two separate nine-hole formats this day and the same two-person teams will play each. To keep pace and scoring easy, please play all nine holes in each format even if one team wins the match prior to finishing the nine holes. After both rounds are completed, a member from each Team shall sign the official scorecard certifying the accuracy of the scores and it should be turned into the Pro Shop.

Holes 1 thru 9

This is a two-person best ball format. The lowest gross score should be recorded per two-person team. The team with the lowest gross score on that hole will win one point for their match. If score is tied, the hole is halved. The team with the highest number of points after nine holes wins the match and will win 1.0 point for their side. If a tie, each team will win 0.5 point for their side.

Holes 10 thru 18

This is an alternate shot format which starts at each tee box. First golfer tees off and the team alternates until ball is holed. The team must use the same ball all the way through the hole. Second Team member tees off on next hole. The team with the lowest gross score on that hole will win one point for their match.

Friday

An email will be sent out late Thursday after the Captains’ create the new pairings for the Friday format and associated tee times. This is a one-on-one match round with the player with the low gross score on each hole winning a point for the hole. A tie halves the hole. The player with the most points after 18 holes is the winner of the match. The match winner will get 1.0 point for their side. In case of a tie, each will get 0.5 point for their side.

After the round is completed, a member from each Team shall sign the official scorecard certifying the accuracy of the scores and it should be turned into the Pro Shop.

Winners Determined and Announced

The winning side will be determined by adding up the match points won by each side for all three formats. The side with the most points wins.
